Enhancing Office and Circulation Spaces for Accessibility and Fire Safety Improvements

The project involved upgrading existing academic office rooms and circulation spaces, including accessibility and fire safety improvements for the University of Edinburgh‘s Edinburgh Law School. The works included a rationalisation of all the existing services above the ceiling, to provide safe access for future maintenance. Fire stopping was also upgraded, while a number of fire doors were added to consolidate existing fire compartmentation.

For improved accessibility, existing corridor features were retained and highlighted with colour to create visual clues for navigation as well as drawing attention to the architectural details. The floor was made wheelchair accessible by widening doorways and removing existing narrow fire doors. Bespoke Oak fire doors were installed on hold opens, the design matching the language of the refurbishment in the rest of the department.

In the office fit out, bespoke oak shelving was provided for the academics, with improved lighting and decoration works. Proposals were carefully prepared to allow the works to be carried out in a live building around other building users. The works were completed on programme and on budget.
