This rural cottage renovation in Perthshire replaced a cramped kitchen and dark lean-to with a bright, oak framed extension.
The new glazed gable connects the house to the garden and woodland views, while large rooflights brighten the central kitchen and dining area.
The existing kitchen in this rural cottage was cramped and gloomy so the house had a poor connection to the back garden and the beautiful woodland and river beyond it. The existing lean-to kitchen was replaced with new green oak frame extension. The pitched roof to the new extension continues a series of gable ends to the adjacent property. The new glazed gable opens up the house to the garden through timber framed bi-fold doors. The full height glazing allows long views up into the tree canopy of the stunning woodland behind the house. New rooflights bring natural light into the central kitchen and dining area.
The green oak came from trees grown in France. Carpenter Oak were the specialist oak frame subcontractor involved in the project as they had a local office in Perth. They advised on detailed design and when it came to installation, a team of specialist oak frame installers arrived from France to put it all together on site. Curved braces to the frame come from naturally curved pieces of oak. The result is a seamless blending of traditional construction with modern functionality.
